about

Theo Duong (b. 2003) is a composer and pianist from Sacramento, California. Theo's music is rooted in deeply personal expression and storytelling, weaving styles ranging from late-romantic classical music, jazz, and indie pop to form a colorful, melodic, and often dreamy sound.

Currently, Theo studies with Prof. David Garner at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he is pursuing his master's degree in composition. Previously, he attended the Boston Conservatory at Berklee from 2021-2025, earning his bachelor's degree in composition under the direction of Dr. Stephen Halloran.

Driven by a belief that instrumental study is essential to effective composition, Theo prioritizes hands-on music-making alongside academic study, treasuring both the opportunities to learn and relationships made with other musicians.

While at the Boston Conservatory, he studied chamber music extensively under the direction of Prof. Judith Eissenberg, performing in concerts and masterclasses alongside performance majors. During this time, he also worked to develop his individual technique, studying piano with Dr. Jonathan Bass and conducting with Prof. Larry Isaacson.

In addition to classical music, Theo actively works to integrate other traditions into his musicianship, especially ones based in improvisation. At the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, he studied jazz harmony and dedicates time into fostering his jazz technique. In his high school years, Theo also studied Vietnamese Đờn ca tài tử on the instruments đàn kìm & sáo under the guidance of Prof. Ngoc Dung.
